Ways to Support an Author (Like Me!) Without Spending a Fortune
Have you Met Allie

As readers, we often think the best way to support an author is by buying their books. While that certainly helps, there are actually many ways to encourage and support authors—some of which cost little to nothing.

As someone who has had the privilege of contributing to anthologies and sharing my stories with readers, I can tell you that every bit of support matters. Whether you’re cheering on a bestselling author or someone like me who is still building her writing journey, your encouragement makes a difference.

Buy the Book (If You Can)

Anchored In Hope

Of course, purchasing a book is one of the most direct ways to support an author. Every sale helps demonstrate reader interest and can open doors to future opportunities.

If you’ve been following my writing journey, you may know that I was recently featured in Anchored in Hope, A Year of Hope and I’m excited to share that I am also a contributing author in an upcoming collection called The Courage to Say Yes, which is currently available for preorder. Every preorder helps authors and publishers gauge interest and build momentum before launch day.

Leave a Review

This is one of the most valuable gifts you can give an author.

You don’t need to write a lengthy essay. Even a few sentences about what you enjoyed can help future readers decide whether to pick up the book. Reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, and BookBub all make a difference.

Request the Book at Your Library

Libraries often purchase books based on patron requests. If you enjoy a book, ask your local library to carry it. This helps both the author and other readers discover new stories.

Share the Book on Social Media

A simple photo, Instagram story, Facebook post, or TikTok video can introduce a book to readers who may never have heard of it otherwise.

Word-of-mouth recommendations remain one of the most powerful marketing tools available.

Join an Author’s Newsletter

Newsletters allow authors to connect directly with readers. By subscribing, you’re helping authors build a community around their work and stay informed about new releases, events, and projects.

Attend Book Events

Whether it’s a virtual book launch, a local bookstore signing, or an online author chat, showing up matters. Authors appreciate seeing readers engage with their work and celebrate their accomplishments.

Follow and Engage

Following an author on social media is wonderful, but engagement is even better. Like their posts. Leave comments. Share their content. Every interaction helps increase visibility and reach new readers.

Gift Books to Friends

Books make wonderful gifts. When you discover a title you love, consider purchasing a copy for a friend, family member, teacher, or fellow book lover.

Not only are you supporting the author, but you’re also helping spread a love of reading.

Recommend Books in Book Clubs

Book clubs are fantastic for authors. Suggesting a favorite title for your next discussion can introduce dozens of new readers to an author’s work.

Encourage the Writer in Your Life

Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t financial at all—it’s encouragement.

Writing can be a lonely journey filled with self-doubt. A simple message saying, “I loved your story,” “Your words inspired me,” or “I can’t wait to read what you write next” can mean more than you realize.

Final Thoughts

As readers, we have incredible power. Every review, recommendation, share, and preorder helps authors continue doing what they love: telling stories that connect us.

If you’ve supported my writing journey in any way—whether you’ve read my blog posts, listened to my podcast, purchased a book, shared my content, or simply cheered me on from the sidelines—thank you.

And if you’d like to continue supporting my work, I would be honored if you’d consider preordering The Courage to Say Yes and joining me on this exciting next chapter.

Because every story matters—and every reader does too.
