One of the greatest gifts we can give our children isn’t found on a toy store shelf—it’s found between the pages of a good book.
Stories have an incredible way of shaping hearts, building empathy, and teaching life lessons that often stay with us long after we’ve turned the final page. While books can entertain us, they can also help us grow into kinder, braver, and more compassionate people.
That’s the power of reading.
Books Help Build Character
Children learn by watching the people around them, but they also learn by walking alongside the characters they meet in books.
When a character chooses honesty over convenience, readers see integrity in action.
When someone stands up for what’s right, even when it’s difficult, readers witness courage.
When characters forgive, persevere, or show kindness, those moments become opportunities for meaningful conversations.
Books allow children to experience situations they may not encounter in their own lives while safely exploring emotions, choices, and consequences.
Character Traits That Books Can Teach
Every story offers a chance to learn something new. Some of the most valuable character traits books can encourage include:
- Kindness
- Compassion
- Honesty
- Courage
- Responsibility
- Perseverance
- Gratitude
- Respect
- Patience
- Empathy
As you read together, pause occasionally to ask questions such as:
- What would you have done in this situation?
- Was that the right choice? Why or why not?
- How do you think that character felt?
- What lesson do you think the author wanted us to learn?
- Have you ever experienced something similar?
These simple conversations can deepen comprehension while helping children connect the story to their own lives.
Great Books Create Great Conversations
Some of my favorite reading memories aren’t just about the books themselves—they’re about the conversations that followed.
A chapter can spark discussions about friendship.
A picture book can lead to talking about inclusion.
A historical novel can open the door to learning about courage during difficult times.
Reading together creates space for families to talk about values in a natural and meaningful way.
Character Growth Doesn’t End in Childhood
The wonderful thing about books is that they continue shaping us throughout our lives.
As adults, we still find ourselves inspired by fictional heroes, challenged by memoirs, encouraged by faith-filled books, and motivated by stories of resilience.
Every book has the potential to change the way we see the world—or ourselves.
That’s why I believe reading is one of the best forms of lifelong personal growth.
Choosing Books That Matter
Not every book needs to teach a life lesson, and there’s certainly room for books that simply make us laugh or help us escape for a while.
But it’s also worth intentionally filling our bookshelves with stories that encourage strong character and positive values.
Look for books that feature:
- Characters who grow through challenges.
- Positive friendships and healthy relationships.
- Acts of kindness and generosity.
- Perseverance through setbacks.
- Respect for people from different backgrounds and experiences.
- Hope, forgiveness, and resilience.
These stories become more than entertainment—they become tools for building character.
The Lasting Impact of Reading
Years from now, children may not remember every detail of every book they read. But they’ll remember how stories made them feel. They’ll remember the heroes who inspired them to be brave. They’ll remember the characters who taught them compassion. And perhaps most importantly, they’ll carry those lessons into the people they become. Every page turned is another opportunity to grow—not just as a reader, but as a person.
So the next time you open a book, remember that you’re doing more than reading a story. You’re helping grow character, one chapter at a time.
