EXCERPT
The moon’s silvery orb graced the sky low to the west.
Maria and Samantha crept from their second floor hole-in-the-wall. An hour-and-fifteen-minute-long drive taunted them in the brisk air. The black camera case landed with a dull thump on the stained passenger seat.
The compact car took some time to warm up in the autumn chill.
Both women jittered with anxiousness. Overeager, their excitement internalized in a frenzied understanding not necessary to voice. Soon, Luke would be close.
Through mountain passes and little towns thawing from the night, they drove. Crisp air locked outside the heated car.
Samantha and Maria took turns at the wheel, choosing songs and discussing strategies. Maria wanted pictures from his office and the people — in particular the women he came in contact with. Maybe a shot of Hampton. Samantha wanted to film his house’s exterior in his absence, take the time to get to know him, be on his land, among his things.
Anticipation increased in the car’s interior while they passed through trees lining the freeway through Coeur d’Alene and into the drawn out spread belonging to Post Falls. A decision needed to be reached regarding which route to take with exits fast approaching.
“I really want some current pictures of him, Samantha. We need up-to-date ones.” Maria whined, her tinny voice kneading the tension.
“I know, Maria. I want to see him, too. I just think it would be stupid to lurk outside his office in public, during the day. Too many people would be able to see us. What do you think would happen if they viewed you taking pictures? Trust me. It just isn’t the best choice right now.” But Samantha wouldn’t fight hard or long because she too was bent on seeing him.
Maria’s desire for control won out. “No, you’re right. We can’t see him yet. Look at us. We’re disgusting. We’ll need to get more fit before we get too close to him.” She laughed, the sound empty in the small cab. “Can you imagine how he’d look at us, if he saw this?” She waved their hand at their large form.
Truth hurt. Samantha had put more effort in gaining weight to slow down their physical capabilities. Maybe put more distance between the killings. But she’d never considered she might meet the One, or find Him.
Gaining weight had been a short-sighted move that just might cost her more than she wanted to lose. More than she could lose.
Samantha didn’t argue with the logic of Maria’s cruel statement. Because Samantha was the fat one – not Maria. Maria would never have allowed the weight gain that Samantha had put on. Never.
