There is something magical about settling into your favorite chair, opening a new book, and letting the rest of the world disappear. As book lovers, we all know that reading isn’t just a hobby—it’s an experience. And just like any great adventure, it’s even better when you’re prepared.
Over the years, I’ve realized that my “must-haves” have become almost as important as the book itself. Whether I’m reading on the porch with a cup of coffee, curled up in bed on a rainy afternoon, or waiting for an appointment, having my own little book lover’s survival kit makes reading even more enjoyable.
Here are the essentials that never fail me.
A Great Book (Of Course!)
Every survival kit starts with the star of the show—a book you can’t wait to dive into.
I usually keep both a physical book and a Kindle nearby. If I finish one unexpectedly (because we’ve all stayed up way too late saying, “Just one more chapter!”), I already have another book ready to go.
A Comfortable Bookmark
Gone are the days of folding page corners.
I love using beautiful bookmarks that make me smile every time I open my book. Even better? Printable bookmarks that you can swap out with the seasons. They’re inexpensive, fun, and add a little personality to every reading session.
(Be sure to check out the free printable bookmarks here on Reading with Frugal Mom!)
A Cozy Blanket
Reading and blankets simply belong together.
Even in the summer, I find myself reaching for a lightweight throw. There’s something comforting about wrapping up while escaping into another world.
Your Favorite Drink
Every reader has that drink.
Maybe it’s coffee.
Maybe it’s tea.
Maybe it’s hot chocolate.
Or perhaps it’s an iced lemonade while reading outside.
Whatever it is, having your favorite beverage nearby makes reading feel like a little act of self-care.
Good Lighting
Nothing ruins a great reading session like straining your eyes.
A quality reading lamp or book light makes all the difference, especially if you’re a nighttime reader. Your future self—and your eyes—will thank you.
A Reading Journal
Have you ever finished a book and completely forgotten what it was about six months later?
You’re not alone.
That’s one of the reasons I started keeping a reading journal. I jot down favorite quotes, memorable characters, ratings, and a few thoughts after each book.
Looking back through those pages is almost like revisiting old friends.
Sticky Tabs
If you’re someone who loves saving favorite quotes or important passages, colorful page flags are wonderful.
They’re removable, won’t damage your pages, and make it easy to return to those unforgettable moments.
Noise-Canceling Headphones (or Soft Music)
Sometimes silence isn’t possible.
When the house is busy or I’m waiting somewhere, a pair of headphones and soft instrumental music help me stay focused on the story.
It’s amazing how quickly distractions fade away.
Reading Snacks
Let’s be honest…
Books and snacks are one of life’s greatest combinations.
I try to choose snacks that won’t leave greasy fingerprints on the pages. Some of my favorites include:
- Grapes
- Pretzels
- Popcorn
- Trail mix
- Apple slices
- Cheese cubes
Your books will appreciate the clean hands!
A Tote Bag
Book lovers are rarely carrying just one book.
A sturdy tote bag keeps everything together—your current read, Kindle, bookmark, notebook, water bottle, and maybe even a library book that’s due back tomorrow.
A Reading Playlist
Sometimes music enhances the atmosphere.
There are wonderful instrumental playlists inspired by fantasy worlds, cozy cottages, coffee shops, libraries, or rainy afternoons.
The right soundtrack can make the story feel even more immersive.
Reading Wherever You Go
One habit I’ve developed over the years is keeping a book with me at all times.
Waiting at the doctor’s office?
Read.
Early for an appointment?
Read.
Long car ride (as a passenger)?
Read.
Instead of scrolling through social media, I get a few extra chapters in—and those little moments really add up over the course of a year.
Remember, Your Survival Kit Is Personal
The best part about creating your own Book Lover’s Survival Kit is that it reflects you.
Maybe yours includes fuzzy socks.
Maybe it’s your favorite candle.
Maybe it’s reading with your dog curled up beside you.
Or perhaps it’s enjoying a quiet hour before everyone else wakes up.
There isn’t a right or wrong way to build your perfect reading experience. The goal is simply to create a space where you can slow down, relax, and enjoy the incredible stories waiting on your bookshelf.
After all, books have a wonderful way of helping us travel the world, meet unforgettable characters, and see life from new perspectives—all without ever leaving our favorite reading chair.
